Inverness has managed to retain a thriving mix of independent shops and familiar
chains. This is in part because it’s the shopping centre for the highlands with people
travelling hours to shop in Inverness.
For the outdoor enthusiast there are a number of outdoor supplies shops selling everything
from outdoor clothes to tents to mountaineering equipment.
Inverness is also the place to buy a kilt or tartan with a number of highland wear
shops, some of which make the tartan on the premises. Advice is on hand. It’s usually

One popular souvenir is malt whisky. There are a small number of shops selling whisky
with an amazing range of single malts. Some from distilleries which no longer exist.
Occasionally you will see whisky tasting sessions advertised.
Crafts and pottery are also popular buys. Many people in the Highlands make a living
through art and there are a number of art galleries in Inverness. In addition some
shops sell highland jewellery, which tends to be based on celtic designs. You are
also likely to see traditional highland drinking vessels called quaiches. Usually
silver, they make excellent mementos or gifts.
